If you are struggling with mental health challenges – whether it be dealing with general life-related stress and anxiety, or more severe conditions such as depression, addiction, grief, or PTSD – therapy or support groups can provide much needed short-term and long-term relief.

For some men, sitting or lying on a couch in a therapist’s office sounds uncomfortable. However, if you can find a right therapist that suits your individual needs and personality, then opening up to a professional about your struggles can really help.

Here are some ways to get started with therapy.

Determine What You Want Out of It

Some of us men may already know what help we need, but regardless of whether you know what you need or not, these are some of the primary benefits of getting therapy:

– Finding root causes of mental health challenges
– Develop coping mechanisms related to stress and anxiety
– Finding ways to interact with people that benefits all
– Looking at things differently (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy)
– Embracing mindfulness and finding ways to enjoy living in the present more

Finding a Therapist

The first step is to talk to your family doctor, and they may be able to refer you to someone that meets your needs.

If you do not have a family doctor, you can start searching online. One online resource that HIMbody recommends is BetterHelp. If you cannot find a therapist in your local region, then online therapy might be right for you. This online resource will match you to a suitable therapist that aligns with your objectives, preferences, etc.

There are also various engagement options, including:

– Video Conferencing
– Text Messaging
– Speaking over the phone
– Live chat

Try Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

A very common treatment option these days involves Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, or CBT. If you engage in therapy, your therapist may likely recommend some CBT treatment options, or you can tackle it yourself which is one of the benefits of CBT.

CBT involves re-framing how you think about things. Do you notice that some people can shrug things off or be less stressed given the exact same situation you may be in? Do you find yourself being extremely irritable or impatient, when others are chill and relaxed?

Consider Joining a Support Group

If therapy still feels uncomfortable for you or you don’t feel it’s the right solution for your circumstances, then consider joining a support group.

Support groups don’t have to be formal – it could just be a group of guys that meet together regularly to partake in commonly enjoyed activities such as informal team sports, but where it is also a safe place to talk about life’s challenges.

If online support groups are more comfortable for you, here are some focused on supporting men:

EVRYMAN, which offers drop-in programs, peer-led support groups, resources and other tools for managing your mental health. Offers a monthly plan at approximately $30 per month.
Meetup, which offers a broad online community to either join or start your own support group.

Knowledge For Men. Looking for more of a coaching relationship that focuses on personal growth and development? This site may be right for you.

The key point is finding someone to talk to. Therapy, support groups, or even friends and family can all be considered as best options based on your own personal needs. Find something that suits you.
