Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)

Feeling stressed due to life’s pressures – whether it be work related stress, financial stress, family challenges, or other struggles – can lead our physical bodies, specifically our muscles, to unknowingly become tense. Sometimes we go through busy days and do not even realize how tense our bodies have become, until we feel pain, soreness or discomfort at the end of the day.

Whenever you feel physically tense due to stress or any other reason, try this common technique called Progressive Muscle Relaxation, or PMR.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation involves tensing your various muscle groups, then releasing them in order to directly observe the feeling of being relaxed. It teaches you to clearly observe the difference between tense muscles and relaxed muscles.

The more you practice this exercise, the more you will naturally observe when you’re feeling tense and know how to instinctively relax.

TIP – when first practicing this routine, do not tense your muscles to the point of experiencing pain. The primary purpose is to learn the difference in feeling between tense and relaxed muscles.

Download the PDF below that contains a script on how to use this technique (audio version coming soon).

The script itself is not important – it is the technique – and there are many alternative options to learn this technique, with some provided directly here on this page.

FINAL THOUGHT – like any other skill, if you practice this regularly (couple times a day every day), you will eventually be able to do this on autopilot without following any script and even be able to skip some steps (such as tensing your muscles and going straight to relaxation).
